How do you sanitize makeup products and brushes?
With makeup products being applied directly on skin and near sensitive areas such as eyes and lips, maintaining proper hygiene is a major focal point in my work.
My makeup brushes bristles and handles are scrubbed thoroughly in soapy water and rinsed until the water runs clear. Powder products are wiped clean and sprayed down with 70% rubbing alcohol until saturated and left to dry. Cream products like lipsticks, foundations, and concealers scooped onto a pallet before use on skin. Mascara is applied with a disposable spoolie.
How long does application take?
Application time varies based on look, but on average can be from as little as 35 minutes to 1 hr and 30 mins.
What does the process look like?
I consult with you what look you would like to achive such as the colors and the coverage you like. I then apply skin prep including a serum, moisturizer, and lip balm. If the shooting is outdoors, I can apply sunscreen as a base. I then do eyes, base, brows, then lips, and if desired lashes. I set the face with setting spray then lightly powder.
How does makeup for film and photos differ from in person makeup.
Makeup for both occasions should look presentable in both conditions, but for photos, consideration must be made for flashback and excessive shine. Normally in life, we are lit outdoors by the sun's rays or by overhead light bulbs and not by the bright flash of a camera strobe light which can cause dewy looking skin to look greasy and light reflecting blurring powders to look chalky white.
To avoid this, I make sure to powder the skin with silica free powders and to mattify areas that can exaggerate texture while letting some areas maintain some dewyness to add life to the skin.
